choose joy ...

A lovely chippy, scroll-y, shabby white frame jumped into my cart at Amvets a few weeks ago.  I don't know how that happens!!  But it happens often!  It was so appealing that I decided to transform it into a project close to my heart.  Using bits and bobs of vintage and recycled fabric, I appliqued "Choose Joy" onto a cheerful background as a reminder that living a life of joy, is indeed, a worthy goal.  Isn't the frame on this old picture lovely?

I dug through my fabric stash and came up with three compatible pink cotton remnants.  The one on the left was purchased most recently at an estate sale.  The one in the middle is quite old, and the one on the right is the "youngest."  Next, I enlarged the letters J-O-Y on my computer to 425 font size.  The font is Cooper Std. Black.  I liked it because it has soft, rounded edges which makes it easier to applique.

After I stitched the three pieces together, I stabilized the rectangle with fusible interfacing to give it a little more body.  I used Heat 'n Bond Iron-On Adhesive on the back of the letters.  Remember to lay your letters in reverse when using adhesive fusibles.

Can you see the pretty stitches I used to softly embellish the seams between the different fabrics?  My Husqvarna sewing machine has oodles of specialty stitches.  I used a very fine blanket stitch to applique the letters to the background.

The little bird is made from piece of recycled clothing.  I embroidered "choose" onto the fabric using my Husqvarna machine, traced the bird image onto the fabric, cut it out and just used spray adhesive to secure it in place until I stitched it down with same small blanket stitch.

It was a fun project and since we're heading into the month of "love" and since I'm so appreciative of all my lovely friends following my adventures at the cottage-on-the-creek, I'm giving this sweet Choose Joy picture and a couple of other goodies, to one lucky follower.  I hope you'll enter the first Cottage and Creek Choose Joy Giveaway. The drawing will be held February 14th.  Thanks for stopping by!

I love your blog and and your picture but I tried to get my font on my pc to go to 425 and the highest it will go is 45 in my MS Word processing document. I have an up to date computer and software MS Vista so what am I doing wrong? I've always wondered how people get their pc to do all this stuff with fonts etc and I can't seem to do it. Am I missing something? But I love the picture and was going to make it.
